Helpful Horse Trail Information

Maximum Weight:
For the safety of our guests and horses, riders should not exceed a maximum weight of 85kg.

Required Skill & Fitness Level:
To make the most of our horseback trails, we recommend that riders are healthy and have a relatively good level of fitness (we’ll help you get fitter while on the ride!). Riding with us needs a degree of physical fitness, as these rides are not recommended for inexperience or unfit riders (we do offer beach rides for those who feel like doing shorter rides and completely experienced enough for the longer trails. The Beach & Safari trail includes different types of riding including long canters on sand, to relaxed walks with the wildlife we encounter along the way. We also swim with our horses through two rivers and do a few shallow crossings.

Our Horses:
Our horses are smallish, super fit, hardy local breeds. They are safe, well mannered and are very lively when needed but also happy to plod along with inexperienced riders. Our McLellan saddles are comfortable trail riding saddles and we use soft bits on all our horses.

The Tack and Gear:
We use McLellan trail saddles, made locally, designed for the comfort of both horse and rider alike. We recommend you wear half or full chaps with comfortable riding boots and a light weight riding helmet, preferably with good ventilation. We do have a limited number of chaps and helmets at the stables, but we highly recommend that you bring your own helmet and chaps.

Transfers:
Private transfers are available from Port Elizabeth or East London. We can also book you on a scheduled transfer.

Accommodation:
It’s important to spend the evenings in comfortable accommodation after long days in the saddle. You will stay over in a beautifully located tented camp on the banks of the Kariega River which will be your base. Our tented camp offers comfortable rooms with views over the river. Meals are served on the central deck. This is also where we relax after our rides to enjoy a drink around the camp fire.

Meals:
We pride ourselves on the wholesome meals we provide our guests. From breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks along the way, we cater for the active traveler. The food is hearty, home cooked and we cater for all dietary requirements.

Highly recommended for anyone that wants the riding experience of a lifetime!

Even though I had all the information about this trail ride from my friend and his daughter that had been down here to do it just a few weeks before me, it surpassed all expectations. Jono (the owner and head guide) is an incredibly good host and all together likeable guy that will go out of his way to make sure you are enjoying yourself both on the trails with the horses and afterwards with added activities like sunset boat rides, game park visits etc etc. The rides themselves are amazing, I can’t think of any places where you get to swim with your horse and cross rivers, wade in the sea, ride through the waves, climb steep hills you never thought possible for a horse to climb with a rider on his back. And last not least canter for miles and miles on wide open beaches where you don’t see a single person on the way, heavenly! The guides listen to your riding wants and adapts according to your riding skills, highest marks to them. The camp is very comfy tents and might seem a bit rough, but it just adds to the whole experience, in my opinion. The surrounding area that you ride in, is stunningly beautiful. Highly recommended for anyone the wants the riding experience of a lifetime!

Thank you for this perfect holiday!

I have been there a couple of times and I enjoyed all the 7-day trails very much. Jono and his team make you feel welcome and try to take care of all your wishes. The horses are wonderful and easy to ride. The landscape is diversified, the beaches are awesome, the river is very beautiful and the day in the game reserve is something really special. It is very exiting to see wild animals from horseback. The camp Jono built is a very beautiful and relaxing place with a lovely view over the river ;-). The boat trip and the sundowners at the beach help to make the whole week unforgettable. I also enjoyed the day in Addo Elephant Park very much. Thank you for this perfect holidays!

We had an amazing week! Riding on endless beaches, swimming across a river with the horses & seeing African wildlife from the saddle. The horses were fit, the food was great and our beds were comfortable. Jono, Aiden and Kathy have given us such a nice week, thank you so much! What more can I say? We'd love to come back, hopefully next year 🙂

A wonderful week with Beachcomber

We had a wonderful week with Jono, Aiden and his whole family including all of the horses. The tented camp is situated with an incredible view and really cozy. I enjoyed watching the sunset and sunrise and didn‘t find anything to complain about - There is everything you need. The food is delicious and fresh cooked. The riding tours and other activities (Addo Elephant Park, boat trip, sunset views, swimming,) are well-planned and a good combination. I can‘t find any words for the horses - they are so trained, reliable, strong-willed and talented (climbing, swimming,…). They are just perfect for this trail, do a good job and also nice day rides. The beaches are endless without any people. Riding in this area is amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The nature around the Camp and river is totally different: a lot of plants, very green (felt kind of a jungle sometimes:) ). During our ride in the Game Reserve and Addo (without horses) we were able to see another kind of landscape and animals like Zebras, Impalas, a Rhino, giraffes, elephants, and lots more. All in all this program is perfect for everyone who‘s dreaming of long beach rides in combination of getting a good overview of South African flora and fauna in a familiar place close to nature. If you don‘t have the time also a day ride is worth staying! Would totally recommend.

Unforgettable bucket-list adventure

What an unforgettable bucket-list adventure. Sure-footed, enthusiastic horses who cantered, swam , climbed steep hills and were consistently steady during the beach rides, river trails and game viewing. Even though I am still a novice when it comes to horse riding, Jono paired me with first Hazel and later Abby - and both of them were a perfect fit. I never felt unsafe throughout this amazing adventure and both of them carried me with the utmost care. We experienced breathtaking views, enjoyed and enjoyed exceptional home-made food. I loved the tented camp, the farm dogs, wildlife and the interaction with Jono and his team (Aidan our trail guide, Catherine the wonderful cook and Thulane who helped with the horses, the swims and trekking us around). Jono also went out of his way to add to our adventure and we enjoyed late afternoon sunsets on the beach and end off with an exhilarating boat ride on the Kariega river. I met the most wonderful and exceptional group of people that made this adventure unforgettable. I would most definitely recommend the Beach & Safari Horse Trails to anyone who loves to experience the outdoors on horseback.
